# Swiss Drone Map - Detailed Documentation

## Overview
Swiss Drone Map (swiss-dronemap.ch) is a comprehensive drone map for drone and UAV (UAS) pilots in Switzerland to plan their flights safely and legally. It integrates various data sources from the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA/BAZL) and other authorities.

Primary user question: "Can I safely and legally fly my drone here today?"

## Key Data Layers
- **Drone Restrictions**: 5km radius around airfields, CTR zones, military perimeters, prisons, nuclear power plants, and nature reserves.
- **Easy Fly Zones**: Areas specifically identified as 30m or 150m away from settlements, forests, railways, and power lines.
- **Aviation Obstacles**: Poles, buildings, transmission lines.
- **NOTAM/DABS**: Daily changed airspace restrictions.
- **Protection Areas Ampel**: Wildlife, forest, nature, and protection-area context shown with traffic-light style severity.
- **Community Reports**: Verified local signs, seasonal bans, municipal rules, breeding-area notices, and other observed local restrictions.
- **Live Flight Tracking**: ADSB data to see manned aircraft in the vicinity.

## Drone Flight Score
Drone Flight Score gives an instant Excellent / Flyable / Difficult / Unsafe rating for a map point and drone profile. It combines:
- Wind speed at 10 m and 80 m
- Wind gusts
- Rain and precipitation probability
- Cloud cover
- Temperature and battery operating conditions
- Kp index for geomagnetic GPS and compass reliability

Supported profiles include DJI Mini, DJI Air, DJI Mavic, FPV 5-inch builds, and DJI Avata. Each profile uses different weather thresholds.

## Weather Forecast
The map provides a 7-day hourly drone weather forecast for any clicked location, including wind and temperature at multiple altitudes, cloud cover, rain probability, UV index, solar radiation, and Kp index.

## Functionality
- **Interactive Map**: Users can toggle layers, measure distances, and find their current location.
- **Location Weather**: Click the map to fetch a local Drone Flight Score and altitude-aware weather forecast.
- **Community Submission**: Users can report local drone restrictions with type, description, optional official link, and photos.
- **Document Management**: (App only) store certificates, insurance, and operator IDs.
- **Multilingual**: Supports DE, EN, FR, IT.

## Technical Details
- Built with Django and OpenLayers.
- Updates aviation data daily at 16:30.
- Updates DABS data hourly.
- Weather forecasts are cached briefly and refreshed per requested location.
- Kp index data is refreshed regularly for flight-readiness scoring.

### Two entry modes

**Step-by-Step Wizard** (~5 minutes, 11 steps):
Guides the pilot through every compliance requirement from scratch to a pre-flight green light.

1. **Certificates** — Does the pilot have the A1/A3 online certificate (UAS.gate/EASA)? Drone insurance?
2. **Drone selection** — Searchable database of 27 popular models (DJI Mini series, Air series, Mavic series, Avata, FPV, Autel EVO, Parrot Anafi) or a DIY/custom builder (weight, camera, FPV, max airspeed for <250 g).
3. **Classification** — Determines drone class: C0, C1, C2, C3/C4, Legacy <250 g, Legacy 250 g+, DIY <250 g, DIY 250 g+, or Specific Category (25 kg+ / high-risk).
4. **Rule summary** — Registration required?, insurance required?, certificate needed (none / A1A3 / A1A3+A2), subcategory.
5. **Subcategory tutorial** — Detailed rules for A1, A2, or A3:
   - A1: C0 may approach people but avoid overflight; C1 must not intentionally overfly uninvolved people; no assemblies; 120 m AGL; VLOS.
   - A2: 30 m minimum from uninvolved people (5 m in low-speed mode); 120 m AGL; VLOS; A2 cert required.
   - A3: 150 m from residential/commercial/industrial areas; no uninvolved people; 120 m AGL; VLOS.
6. **FPV check** — Line of sight / FPV with trained visual observer / FPV alone (not permitted in Open Category — user is redirected).
7. **Location checks** — swiss-dronemap.ch, DABS, NOTAM, CTR zones, nature reserves, military zones, prisons, nuclear plants.
8. **Flight readiness** — Wind below rated limit, no gusts, no rain, visibility for VLOS, battery charged, RTH altitude set, GPS lock, daylight only.
9. **Emergency procedures** — Manned aircraft priority (descend immediately), helicopter (land at once), police (comply, show documents), fly-away (stay calm, know RTH behaviour), power line entanglement (do not risk yourself), injury/damage (assist, report, notify insurer).
10. **Knowledge quiz** — 5 multiple-choice questions covering C1 overflight rules, maximum altitude (120 m AGL), C2/A2 minimum distance (30 m), FPV observer requirement, A3 distance rule. Must score 4/5 to proceed.
11. **Pre-flight checklist** — 6 tap-to-confirm items: location checked on swiss-dronemap.ch; DABS/NOTAM checked; weather within limits; battery charged & RTH set; documents ready; observer confirmed for FPV. All 6 green unlocks the "FLY!" button.
